Open a file

Drag a file onto the window, or use File, then Open File. Excel, CSV, PDF, scans, photos, JSON, XML, text, logs and SQLite files all open.

Three ways to open

  • Drag the file from your desktop onto the Dataweaver window.
  • File menu, then Open File. Or press ⌘O (Ctrl+O on Windows).
  • Double-click the file in Finder or File Explorer, if Dataweaver is set as the app for that kind of file.

Open a whole folder

File, then Open Folder (⇧⌘O, or Ctrl+Shift+O). Every file in the folder appears under Data sources on the left. This is how you give Weaver a folder of invoices or a month of statements.

What opens

Kind of fileEndingsWhat you see
Excel.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .xlsbRows and columns, one tab per sheet. .xlsm and .xlsb open read-only

PDF.pdfPages you can search. Scanned pages are read as text
Pictures of paper.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, .webp, .bmpThe picture, with its text read so you can search it
JSON.json, .jsonl, .ndjsonA tree you can unfold, or a table
XML.xmlA tree or a table. Broken files can be repaired
Text and logs.txt, .log, .mdThe text. Log files get colours for errors and warnings
Data files.parquet, .arrow, .ipcRows and columns
SQLite database.db, .sqlite, .sqlite3, .db3Its tables, read-only

Big files

There is no row limit for spreadsheets. A file with hundreds of thousands of rows opens in pieces so the window stays quick. Text, log and XML files larger than 50 MB can be opened but not scanned in one go.

Word and PowerPoint files do not open yet. Google Sheets does not connect yet.
