How to use Dataweaver
Short pages, plain words, one real example on each. Start with Your first job. It takes three minutes.
Start
Install, sign in, and do your first job in three minutes.
- Install and sign inDownload Dataweaver for Windows or Mac, open it, and sign in with Google or an email address. Free, no card needed.
- Your first jobOpen a file, ask Weaver one question in your own words, and check the answer. Three minutes, using an invoice sheet as the example.
- The screenThe four parts of the Dataweaver window: your data sources on the left, your data in the middle, Weaver on the right, and the bar at the bottom.
Your files
Spreadsheets, PDFs, scans, databases and logs. How each one opens and saves.
- Open a fileDrag a file onto the window, or use File, then Open File. Excel, CSV, PDF, scans, photos, JSON, XML, text, logs and SQLite files all open.
- Spreadsheets you can editChange cells, sort and filter, undo, and save. What happens to formulas and colours when you save an Excel file.
- PDFs, scans and photosOpen a PDF, a scanned page or a photo of paper. Search inside it, ask Weaver about it, and follow every number back to the line it came from.
- DatabasesConnect PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB or SQLite. Browse tables, page through rows, ask Weaver about them. Dataweaver only reads, it never changes a database.
- Logs and web APIsOpen log files with errors coloured, connect Google Cloud logs, or pull data from a web API. For the more technical people in the office.
- Save and convertSave with Cmd+S. Turn a file into Excel, CSV, JSON or XML with Export as. Weaver results are saved the same way.
Ask Weaver
The jobs Weaver does, each with a real example.
- How Weaver worksWeaver is a careful assistant. It does one step, checks the result, fixes what is wrong, and stops when the answer is ready. You see every step.
- Match two listsBank statement against the books. Purchase register against GSTR-2B. Estimate against actual. Get the rows that do not match, each with a reason.
- Clean a messy sheetDates written three ways, extra spaces, duplicates, amounts typed as text. Say what clean looks like and Weaver makes a clean copy.
- Read a folder of documentsPoint Weaver at a folder of invoices, bills or agreements. Get one table with the fields you asked for, and every value linked to its page.
- Charts and the dashboardAsk for a chart and get one drawn from your real columns. Keep the good ones on a dashboard that re-reads your file each time you open it.
- Jobs: the same step on every rowGive Weaver a repeated task, one row at a time. It runs in the background, marks each row done or not, and fixes and reruns only the rows that failed.
- Quick, Standard and ExpertThree ways for Weaver to work. Quick answers fast. Standard is the everyday choice. Expert takes longer and is better with difficult files.
- Change a question, step back, queueEdit a message you already sent and Weaver answers again from there. Step back to an earlier point. Type your next question while Weaver is still working.
- What Weaver remembersTell Weaver a fact once, such as when your financial year starts, and it remembers across conversations. Say forget that, and it does.
Trust
What leaves your computer, how to check an answer, and what a run costs.
- What leaves your computerYour files are not uploaded. To answer, Weaver sends your question and the parts of the data it needs, with personal details replaced first, to AI services.
- Where each number came fromEvery number in an answer is a link to the rows or the page it came from. Every step Weaver took is on screen. This is how you check the work.
- Your runs and your planA run is one question to Weaver. Free gives 30 a month. Plus and Pro give more, add Expert, and keep working when the runs are used up.
Fix it
When something does not work.
- When the answer looks wrongCheck the source rows, look at the step, then ask again with the exact column names. Do not save a result you have not checked.
- Setup did not finishThe first-time setup needs an internet connection and a few minutes. If it fails, read the reason on screen, then press Try again.
- A file will not openCheck the file ending, close the file in Excel, and check the size limits for text and XML files.
- Keyboard shortcutsEvery keyboard shortcut in Dataweaver, listed for Mac and for Windows, on one page.
